One of the fastest and most reliable means of obtaining weather information is through the use of the National Weather Service [NOAA] Weather Radio network.  It provides continuous broadcasts of the latest weather information directly from National Weather Service offices in Charleston, Pittsburgh, Sterling [Virginia] and Blacksburg [Virginia].  Weather messages are updated as needed with timely weather reports.  The Weather Radio operates 24 hours a day.  The broadcasts are tailored to the weather information needs of the people within the receiving area. 

     During severe weather, the National Weather Service can interrupt routine broadcasts and substitute special warning messages.  The Weather Service can also activate specially designated warning receivers.  Such receivers sound an alarm indicating that an emergency exists, alerting the listener to turn the receiver up to an audible volume, or when operated in a muted mode, these radios turn on automatically so that the warning message can be heard.  In addition, there are newer weather radios on the market that allow you to program in the county or counties for which you want the weather radio to alert for.

     The Weather Radios broadcast on one of several high-band FM frequencies ranging from 162.400 to 162.550 megahertz (MHz).  While these frequencies are not normally found on the average home radio, a number of radio manufacturers offer special Weather Radios which operate on these frequencies, with our without the emergency warning alarm.  Weather Radio broadcasts can usually be heard as far as 40 miles from the antenna but this varies depending on the broadcast power as well as terrain.
